» The rate of VAT can vary, 17,5% in the UK, 21% in Ireland etc. Inside the European Union, VAT is not applied on intra-community transactions providing the two companies concerned have a VAT number allocated in their respective countries.
However, VAT is applicable on sales by companies to private individuals anywhere within the EU, and will be recovered by the fiscal authority on imports from outside the EU to any EU country.
» In certain countries, companies with a limited turnover (85,000€ in the UK, 55,000€ in Ireland) do not have to make a separate VAT declaration but will bill VAT on their sales without having to refund the fiscal authority (the authorities consider that small companies will likely pay out as much in VAT as they bring in sales).
